Matthew McConaughey was not wearing a seat belt and was 'held down by his tray table' while onboard a Lufthansa flight which dropped 4,000 feet amid severe turbulence on March 1.
The Oscar-winning actor, 53, whose wife Camila Alves, 41, recounted their terrifying ordeal aboard the flight from Austin, Texas to Frankfurt, Germanylast month - said he experienced a 'hell of a scare' in the incident which injured seven people.
Lufthansa Flight 469 was flying 37,000 feet over Tennessee when the crew reported severe turbulence.
Speaking on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast per Entertainment Tonight:, the True Detective star said: 'My tray table is what held me down. I did not have my seatbelt on, and there was not a seatbelt warning right before it happened.
He added he 'immediately reached over' to Camila to make sure she had her seatbelt on, saying: '[We] held hands just saying, "OK, is that it? Is there another one coming?"

McConaughey said he was traveling with a friend who was a pilot, who reassured him during the emergency.
He said: 'As a person who's not a pilot, my mind goes to the actual engineering of the plane. The steel, it buckled. And you go, "How can something withstand that?"' I happened to have a friend of mine sitting next to me who was a pilot.
'And he was calm as could be. I was like, "Can the plane hold that?" And he was like, "These things are so tested, that yes, don't worry, the plane structurally can hold that" That was a big relief.
'I was like, "If something's wrong, can you fly this thing?" McConaughey adds. "And he was like, "No problem." And I was like, "Great, love to hear that."'
Branding the incident the 'hairiest' he's encountered on a flight, he added the flight attendants 'didn’t look extremely confident.'
The plane was diverted to Washington D.C. after the severe turbulence.
The interview comes after Camilashared a brief video on her Instagram last month showing food and other items strewn about the aisle in the aftermath of the turbulence.
