Matthew McConaughey was not wearing a seat belt and was 'held down by his tray table' while onboard a Lufthansa flight which dropped 4,000 feet amid severe turbulence on March 1.
The Oscar-winning actor, 53, whose wife Camila Alves, 41, recounted their terrifying ordeal aboard the flight from Austin, Texas to Frankfurt, Germanylast month - said he experienced a 'hell of a scare' in the incident which injured seven people.
Lufthansa Flight 469 was flying 37,000 feet over Tennessee when the crew reported severe turbulence.
Speaking on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast per Entertainment Tonight:, the True Detective star said: 'My tray table is what held me down. I did not have my seatbelt on, and there was not a seatbelt warning right before it happened.
He added he 'immediately reached over' to Camila to make sure she had her seatbelt on, saying: '[We] held hands just saying, "OK, is that it? Is there another one coming?"
'Another one did come. It was odd. You hear people's reactions. Some people were ghost silent. Some people had big bursts of laughter. And it was not like, "Oh, this is fun." It was like, "I'm in shock."

Describing the horrifying moment the plane suddenly dropped, the actor said: 'Your red wine and the glass and the plates that your food was on are all suspended, floating, still just in the air. And then everything just comes crashing down.'
McConaughey said he was traveling with a friend who was a pilot, who reassured him during the emergency.
He said: 'As a person who's not a pilot, my mind goes to the actual engineering of the plane. The steel, it buckled. And you go, "How can something withstand that?"' I happened to have a friend of mine sitting next to me who was a pilot.
'And he was calm as could be. I was like, "Can the plane hold that?" And he was like, "These things are so tested, that yes, don't worry, the plane structurally can hold that" That was a big relief.
'I was like, "If something's wrong, can you fly this thing?" McConaughey adds. "And he was like, "No problem." And I was like, "Great, love to hear that."'
Branding the incident the 'hairiest' he's encountered on a flight, he added the flight attendants 'didn’t look extremely confident.'
The plane was diverted to Washington D.C. after the severe turbulence.
The interview comes after Camilashared a brief video on her Instagram last month showing food and other items strewn about the aisle in the aftermath of the turbulence.

She also shared details of the flight - which she described as 'chaos' after the turbulence hit - while thanking those who helped her.
'On Flight last night, plane dropped almost 4000 feet, 7 people went to the hospital, Everything was flying everywhere,' Alves McConaughey began.
'To respect the privacy of those around me that’s all I am showing but the plane was a CHAOS And the turbulence keep on coming,' she added.
'The @lufthansa flight you are seeing on the news today!!!! Yes…that one. Thank God everyone was safe and ok,' the model added.
The flight was diverted to Dulles Airport outside of Washington D.C., with Alves McConaughey thanking the staff of the Marriot Bonvoy near the airport.
'I must say everyone @marriotbonvoy by the airport of Washington where we had to divert to and spend the night was so kind!' she said.
'And we made it to the bar with 1 minute before closing…slept well, getting on new flight today, To the journey I continue… Karin Lacy was a savior with me until 1am working on new flights!!!' she concluded.
Alves McConaughey also took to her Instagram story, sharing a headline from an NBC News story about the flight she was on.
'Yeap... this flight we were on,' Alves said in the caption of her Instagram story post on Thursday.
She also shared a new video on Thursday from her new flight to Frankfurt, giving her 1 million fans and followers a quick update.

'Just my luck, after last night. Just got on the rescheduled flight and the pilot's saying we have 45 minutes of turbulence, getting out of Washington,' she revealed.

Her husband Matthew McConaughey, who she married in 2012, made headlines last week when she shared a snap of him cutting their 10-year-old son Livingston's hair.
Their oldest son, 14-year-old Levi, was also there looking on along with the family dog in the snap, which got nearly 70K likes.
The scary flight incident came just months after she suffered a neck injury after falling down a flight of stairs.
'Sh** Happens. I am ok but… Don’t fall people…don’t fall…' Alves McConaughey began in her caption from early November.
'Ladies hold your long dresses up or lose pants up when going by down the stairs!!' she continued.
'Wind blew mine as I was midair, pant fabric wrapped around my shoe and down the floor I went…A silly fall, turned into not so silly neck situation, recovery time ahead…' she concluded.
Earlier on Thursday, one of the other passengers aboard Lufthansa Flight 469 - Susan Zimmerman - opened up about her experiences on Good Morning America.
'I don't think any of the people on board - the cabin crew - I don't think any of them have experienced anything like this,' passenger Susan Zimmerman said.
'This was shocking. It was kind of like you're in slow motion. You just see everything - like in a movie where you see everything lift and all of a sudden it just comes right back down,' she said.
Zimmerman added the 4,000-foot drop, 'felt like five seconds of falling and then there was shaking.'

Many of the passengers weren't wearing their seatbelts at the time of the unexpected turbulence, since the seat belt sign was not on at the time of the turbulence.
ABC News Aviation contributor John Nance added, 'This is the very reason that pilots warn you from the cockpit to keep your seatbelts fastened, because if you hit something like this and you're not strapped in, you could go flying.
